GROUND · XIII
This card is the off-duty sign. Not everywhere, not with everyone — but somewhere, with someone, or alone, the face gets to come off. Rest for the performer is part of the mourning, not a pause in it.
Voices — this card, in use
Teaching vignettes: illustrative voices showing the practice applied. The living candle wall grows below.
At my brother's funeral I greeted two hundred people. In the car after, my wife said 'you're off now' and I cried the whole ride. That car became my room. Still is, some Tuesdays.
I told my roommate: when my door is shut, I'm not being strong in there. She started leaving tea outside it. Nobody performed anything, and that saved me that winter.
Whatever is coming up
This room is open every time — tonight, the anniversary, years from now. What's here right now?
The practice
Name one no-performance zone — the car, the shower, one person's kitchen — and visit it once today. Even five unmanaged minutes counts.
When it's yours
If it's early daysThe first weeks demand the most performance: services, callers, paperwork voices. Schedule the collapse room the way you'd schedule the events.
If it's been a long timeYears on, composure can calcify into the only setting. If you can't remember your last unperformed hour, that's the signal — not a flaw, a signal.
If it was complicatedIf the room would judge the relationship you actually had, you owe that room the performance least of all. Choose your unguarded space by safety, not by obligation.
Sit with this
Who is the last person you didn't perform for — and when did you last let them see this?
Grief literacy
Term to know: The labor of composure — holding it together is real work. Safe rooms are where the worker gets to rest.
If this card holds you
This room doesn't expire. Grief isn't a one-time event — anniversaries, ambushes, the good years, the hard ones — and the card in your hand is a permanent key. Come back for whatever is coming up.
