This card reassigns it. The hands that measured food and noticed limps now have one patient left. Treating yourself as worth that care is the caretaking, continued.
Voices — this card, in use
Teaching vignettes: illustrative voices showing the practice applied. The living candle wall grows below.
Six a.m. was pills-in-peanut-butter time for twelve years. Now six a.m. is my coffee outside, feet on the step where he sat. The shift didn't ask permission; the body just kept the appointment.
The vet said 'you took incredible care of her.' Driving home I realized nobody was assigned to me. So I hired myself. First order: actual lunches. She'd have approved — she loved lunch.
Whatever is coming up
This room is open every time — tonight, the anniversary, years from now. What's here right now?
The practice
At one of their old care hours — feeding time, the evening walk — do the equivalent act for yourself, and let it be deliberate: same tenderness, new patient.
When it's yours
If it's early daysThe first empty care-hours are the hardest hours of the day. Giving them a new assignment beats leaving them vacant.
If it's been a long timeIf your self-care quietly died with them — many people's routines were built around the animal's — rebuild yours on their old schedule. The timetable still works.
If the ending was hardIf you carry guilt about their care, transferring care to yourself can feel undeserved. Do it as tribute, then: they'd recognize the hands.
Sit with this
What did you do for them every single day without fail — and what's today's version of doing it for you?
Grief literacy
Term to know: Care transfer — the caretaking doesn't end; it changes address. You are the remaining patient.
If this card holds you
This room doesn't expire. Grief isn't a one-time event — anniversaries, ambushes, the good years, the hard ones — and the card in your hand is a permanent key. Come back for whatever is coming up.
